Christmas Organizing Tip # 12 Friday, Dec 12 2008

Make sure that you store your holiday decor in sturdy bins with lids to keep your treasures protected.  You can use clear bins if it doesn’t bother you to see through to the belongings.  Otherwise you can use solid matching bins, place a label on the outside and you will keep your special decor in great condition for years to come!

Christmas Organizing Tip # 9 Tuesday, Dec 9 2008

This is your time to make your lists and check them twice.  Creating lists can keep your mind from feeling overwhelmed and relieve the worry that you are going to forget something.  Lists you may need are:

  • Party plans
  • Groceries needed
  • Gifts you need to purchase
  • Gifts your family would like to receive when people ask
  • Errands you need to run

If your errands list is long, then take 3-5 items from the list and make a shorter list for each day.

Christmas Organizing Tip # 8 Monday, Dec 8 2008

Don’t stress yourself out slaving in the kitchen all season unless that is what you enjoy doing during the holidays.  Everything does not have to be homemade to make an enjoyable meal with friends and family.  It’s ok to decorate pre-made cookies or buy a cheesecake and just make a homemade sauce to put on top.  Take guests up on their offer to bring something-it makes people feel like they are helping.  You don’t even have to have a full dinner.  Invite guests over for dessert and coffee or appetizers and wine, they are busy too and may enjoy having a shorter visit so they have time to do their own holiday errands.

Christmas Organizing Tip # 7 Sunday, Dec 7 2008

You have two opportunities to sort through your holiday decorations and decide if you are ready to pass anything on.  The first time is when you get everything out.  Look at each item before you display it and make sure you still treasure it.  If you are on the fence, then display it and wait for opportunity number two.  Your second chance is when you put all the decor away again.  If you displayed items that you didn’t end up enjoying or you received new decor that you like better, this is the time to pass them on.  Either pass items on to someone you know or through donation so someone else can enjoy them!

Holiday newsletters are a great way to stay in touch and let everyone know what your family has been up to all year.

Create a document on your computer listing each month of the year.  Every month jot down a few notes about the highlights for activites for that month.  At the end of the year you will have a quick list to work off of instead of your memory or flipping back through your calendar searching for ideas.

I checked to see what etiquette expert Peggy Post has to say about newsletters.  Her advice is to keep letters upbeat, use only relevant news and keep it to the front of one page.

Christmas Organizing Tip # 5 Thursday, Dec 4 2008

Decide how you want to spend your time and energy this holiday.  Do you want it to be about going all out with decorations, to be all about making home baked goodies, to be about entertaining, or about giving special gifts, what about getting involved with a charity?  There is no right answer, you just need to decide for yourself how you want to focus your energy.  Once you know how you want to celebrate, then you will have a focus and it will be easier to say yes or no to requests for your time.  If the request doesn’t fit in with your goals, you know it’s time to politely decline.

Christmas Organizing Tip # 4 Thursday, Dec 4 2008

When you are crunched for time, combine activities whenever possible.  If your goal this season is to spend time with friends and you are working on watching your waistline around all those holiday goodies-invite a friend to go for a walk or jog with you.  If you want to spend time with your kids and really want to make homemade goodies this year, how about a family baking night?  Multi-tasking has it’s drawbacks, but combining activies can be a great thing!

Christmas Organizing Tip # 3 Wednesday, Dec 3 2008

Your holiday decor can be simple and still make you feel in the spirit of the season.  Decor can be as simple as a wreath on the door, burning candles in holiday colors, fresh poinsettias throughout the house and holiday candies in candy dishes.  If you still have artwork that your children created in school, break it out and enjoy their cute little hand reindeer!  You don’t have to be elaborate to dress up the house.  But if you have the energy & are in the mood to go all out, then go for it!
