Make Donating Easy Monday, Jul 28 2008

I store a bin tucked under a table in my office ready for donations at all times.  Keep a box, bin or bag tucked out of the way so when you come across something that doesn’t fit, something you no longer use or toys your kids are done playing with, you can quickly toss them in as you find them.  When you know the donation truck is coming or you will be driving by your favorite charity get it out and pass it on. It’s ok if your box or bag is only partially full, you will still be helping someone through charity with a little or a lot!

Simply Focused Sunday, Jul 27 2008

Life is busy.  It’s common to have several activities or deadlines at the same time, making you feel scattered and like you can’t focus on what to do first.

It sounds so simple, but what really works for me when I feel this way is to grab pen & paper and make a list.  Creating a list makes me think about what really needs to be done in what order and I feel accomplished as I cross off each finished task.  The key to a list is make it manageable!  If you sit down and write a two page list you won’t ever get to the end, be kind to yourself.

Make a short list of 3-5 things you want to accomplish that day.  If you finish with time to spare you can always add something new.  Or you could pat yourself on the back and go take a bubble bath, you probably should have a piece of chocolate too!

If you can’t finish in one day, call it good and move the left-over items to the next day’s list.  If you really do have a very long list running through your head, then go ahead and write everything out but just choose 3-5 items to assign yourself daily.

Making a list will put your mind at ease that you aren’t going to forget something and you will feel a sense of accomplishment as you cross finished tasks off your to-do list!

Organizing Your Organizing Bins Saturday, Jul 26 2008

Check out this website to take your organizing one step further:  www.paceasy.com Bin Buddies are durable fabric inserts with pockets that can be added to a variety of bins that you probably already own or can easily purchase at your local variety store.  Instead of everything ending up in a heap that you have to dig through, Bin Buddies separate your belongings making them easy to see.  Great to use for car organizing, camping and work supplies.  Check out Pet Buddies and Tool Buddies as well.

Happy organizing!

Give A Guilt-Free Gift Sunday, Jul 20 2008

It’s nice to give someone important in our lives a gift to let them know we are thinking of them, but sometimes a gift can become a burden if the recipient doesn’t really like it or need it.  It seems there is something about gifts that can produce a lot of guilt when we think of parting with them.  The next time you want to brighten someone’s day, think of what that person likes and share something that doesn’t stick around forever.  Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

  • For a coffee lover:  Make a date to take them out for coffee & dessert or give a coffee shop gift card
  • Flowers:  Most people don’t have a problem tossing them out after they have served their purpose
  • Movie tickets in a basket with popcorn and their favorite candy
  • Share an activity that they love-take them to a movie, a play, a museum or the zoo
  • Babysit their children so they can have a day alone
  • Give a pampering gift certificate:  Manicures, pedicures and massages are always a hit

The options are as varied as the different people in your life, be creative as you make someone’s day!

Don’t Miss a Date Saturday, Jul 19 2008

How do I keep track of four schedules in our family?  No fancy gizmos, no electronic gadgets, just a good ‘ol pencil (you never know when you need to make a change) and a great dayplanner.  I grew frustrated with a regular calendar with squares as I always ran out of room and appointments would end up out of chronological order.  I use the At-A-Glance QuickNotes Self-Management System, each day has a full column that begins at 8:00 am and ends at 7:45 pm, all events are in order of when they will happen!

Before each new year begins I sit down and transfer all birthdays and special occassions to the new planner in red at the top of that date.  You can even take it one step further by making a note several days before a special occassion to send a card or gift.  It doesn’t take long and goes a long way toward recognizing other people’s special days.

Find what works naturally for you, whether electronic or paper, and use it consistently so you don’t miss a date!
